How to use it
- Choose a photo or initials. For a photo, drop it into the box or choose a file. For initials, type your letters.
- Frame it. Drag the photo so your face sits in the middle of the dashed circle, and zoom until your head and shoulders fill most of it.
- Pick a background (for initials, or behind a transparent logo), and add a border if you want the picture to stand out on a white page.
- Download, then upload it at myaccount.google.com under Personal info → Profile picture.
What makes a good Google profile picture
Your Google picture appears at very small sizes: next to your emails in Gmail, in Google Meet tiles, on comments in Google Docs and on Google Maps reviews. Some things matter more at that size:
- Your face should fill the circle. Crop in closer than feels natural. A full-length photo turns into a dot.
- Plain backgrounds help. A busy background competes with your face when the picture is only 32 pixels wide.
- Contrast matters for initials. White letters on a mid-to-dark colour read best. The colours in the palette above are chosen to work with white.
- Work accounts: keep it professional. Colleagues and clients see it on every meeting invite and shared document.

Photo or initials?
A photo is more personal. People like knowing who they're emailing or meeting, and a friendly headshot puts a face to the name. Initials make sense for shared inboxes, accounts you use for testing, or when you'd simply rather not share a photo. They also look tidier than Google's default single letter.

What size should a Google profile picture be?
Square, and at least 250 × 250 pixels. Google accepts JPEG and PNG files up to 5 MB and scales them down itself, so a 1024 × 1024 image is a safe choice that stays sharp everywhere. More detail in our Google profile picture size guide.
Should I download a PNG or a JPEG?
Either works. PNG keeps flat colours and letters perfectly crisp, which suits initials and logos. JPEG makes a smaller file from a photo. If you're unsure, use PNG.
Why is my picture shown as a circle?
Google displays every profile picture as a circle, but stores a square. The preview here shows the circle, so anything in the corners of your photo won't be seen.
How do I make an initials avatar like Google's default one?
Choose Use initials, type one to three letters, and pick a background colour. Google's own default avatars use a single letter on a solid colour, and yours can look just as clean with your full initials.
Does this change my Google profile picture for me?
No. The tool creates the image file; you upload it yourself at myaccount.google.com. We never connect to your Google account.
